Why it matters

Jen Shang, a philanthropic psychologist and co-founder of the Institute for Sustainable Philanthropy has broken down giving motivations into three categories:

  • situation-based, (triggered by sudden changes in the environment and individuals respond by giving)

  • identity-based, (giving as a way for the donor to express who they are)
